Peranakan Pleasures

A menu of sweet treats, classic geometry and a bright contrast of patterns; what’s not to love about a Peranakan themed dessert table? Borrowing stories from the European, Malay and Chinese cultures in the form of decorative motifs, the Peranakan tradition has since been well known for its massive use of colour and prints. Blending vibrant influences from fashion and architecture, we took to the scene with and drizzled it with the essence of Peranakan culture! Do keep an eye out for details that give this theme that extra oomph!

Achieve this theme with these tips:

  • Serve favourite local desserts.

  • Keep things psychedelically Peranakan with a palette of tones.
  • Think out of the culture. Use geometrically designed book covers of classic novels.

  • Repeat patterns to create a flow.

  • Don't spare the straws. Make sure they've prints on them!

  • Decorate with ornate, porcelain items.

  • Go vintage with wood and the works.

  • Whenever possible, serve dessert on tiles - a lovely Peranakan detail.

  • Add a fluffy bouquet to accentuate the theme of contrast.

  • Remember the 3Ps - Prints, Patterns and Peranakan.
