Many feel that wedding photographs make up the backbone of precious memories. Each shot has to be measured perfectly, each moment locked in time. It is not really about the scenery or background - what really matter are the intimate moments shared between the two of you, moments that could be easily missed by everyone else, everyone except Dean Phng of course. Dean is the real deal. The epitome of your friendly down-to-earth photographer, his interpersonal candour will set you perfectly at ease. What strikes you immediately about Dean firstly would be his multitude of experience. Having been in this field for over 20 years, there isn't much else that Dean hasn't seen - and still, he searches constantly for the best angles to present a different experience altogether for you and your loved ones.
Dean strongly believes that it is not all about having the latest digital equipment; a photographer can be trained extensively in his technical know-hows, but having an eye for detail is what really sets one apart from the others. Preferring to shoot in natural situations with the couple oblivious to the presence of the camera, Dean enjoys the interactive process that he undertakes in getting to know his couple better. He believes that it is essential for the photographer to take the initiative in closing the gap between himself and the couple. "That is how you tell a reliable photographer apart from the pack of usual ones." Dean candidly admits. Working his way up from just a trainee assisting a professional photographer, Dean learnt that it was necessary to pick on all minute details and using these little snippets of information to work to the couple's advantage.
Dean also does overseas shoots and prefers to meet his couples at least 3-6 months in advance to get to know them better. "Understanding them on a deeper level helps me to capture the in-depth emotions that come from them as individuals." He also firmly believes that a wedding backdrop does not need to be confined to the usual spaces of a church, or Singapore itself! "Most importantly, the couple must have an idea of what they like, and I will adhere to their requests as much as I can."
One particular project that has impressed itself on Dean's heart has to be the pre-wedding shoot surprise planned by the groom for his fiancée. The groom wanted to make this shoot unforgettable; therefore he worked closely with Dean to plan the perfect route that would take them down memory lane at their school where they first met. "At the end of the shoot, we planned for a group of their close friends to join in and they all wore coordinated t-shirts! This was truly memorable as I could feel the warmth of friendship amongst them all and it was incredibly rewarding."
This is what truly makes Dean tick - the fact that these processes of planning and detailing involve his contributions. "Anyone can take photos, but not everyone can be part of such momentous occasions." To be able to celebrate these relationships, these friendships - this is essential to Dean Phng. This is what makes Dean larger than life.

If you have a budget that you'll like to keep to, be upfront with your photographer. There ARE components of the photography package that can be negotiated. Just be honest!
